what's cookin in a non-edible way

Today I finished an important draft for my time travel novel. It is tentatively called A Lady Out of Time, but Olivia Rivers- an awesome YA writer in my critique group- hates the name.

But I remember reading A Knight in Shining Armor and Outlander. That's my basis for time travel books. So for me, the name seems right. Anyway I have not settled anything quite yet. The book is not done, but it's like I climbed to the top of the mountain and realized the end of the range is in sight.

I've also been working on two vampire projects. Which is odd, because I thought I was done with vampires for the foreseeable future. Three months ago I might have said Forever. I don't want to write the same old vampire story. And I would not write anything vampire related unless there was a twist.

I found my twist.

If it comes off like I want it too, then it's good. Really messed up and kinky with a post-apocalyptic/debutante vibe. it's also got a little bit of the Walking Dead in it and I really want to call it symbiosis. But I fear that is too much of a sci-fi title. The definition of the word itself is beautiful: A close and often long-term interaction between two or more different biological species.

The gist of it is that most humans are gone and vampires control pockets of civilization. The story is set in London and there are vampire kings and petty feudal spats. Our hero (or maybe anti-hero) is named Demock. I'm not sure I can say much more at this point because I'm still writing it...but I'm liking it so far.

The other thing rolling around in my mind, which I'm actually a bit hesitant to mention since it would get people's hopes up is the next book in the Valerie verse. I have the cover for it. But you know, the more I look at it...that isn't Cer.

The story of Lucas and Val ended, because I saw them with a happily ever after and nothing beyond that. That was the end I envisioned by the time I was done editing LID. And then, about a week ago, I saw what happened next. I am making no promises, but I see this cover and I want to call it Lucas. And it would be a continuation.

  1. I loved the Valerie series!! Honestly could not put it down. I was intrigued though at the end when Molly showed up on their door step so I was hoping/thinking there would be continuation. :)

    1. AD- there will defo be continuation, I just don't know what yet. I'd imagined it being Cer, Rachel and a cameo from Lucas and Val, but the story hasn't coalesced. But a Val, Lucas story materialized out of nowhere and would be a wonderful thing to write that I think the fans would enjoy. So, I don't know what will happen.

  2. I stumbled upon the first book in your Valerie Dearborn series and I since finished the entire series in a matter of a week (on top of my grad school reading and internship...oh and two kids, ha ha). I loved the books and I really like your writing style so I am looking forward to your future work. The post-apocolyptic vampire novel seems super interesting and I cant wait to read the finished product. Thank you so much for making my week interesting :)

  3. And I don't know...that picture definitely screams Fer, but of course he's your brain child so 'Mama knows best'. I guess I've always imagined Lucas to resembled Chris Hemsworth...or Thor with short hair :)

*maybe even a little Paul Walker*

    1. I LOVE Tangled! I kind of wish Flynn Ryder were real. Tell me if that sounds creepy and I'll delete it ;)

Covers are hard, the picture of the model is NEVER right. So it becomes about the emotions the cover invokes. It's always dangerous to put a face on a cover because people have an idea in their head and a face messes with it. That's why most covers have hot man-boob. Cause a reader looks at it and thinks, 'yes, that is his lovely nipple!'

Is the dude on the cover how I imagine Lucas? Hell, no! But the shipwrecked/reborn angle is awesome.

  5. I found Bewitching the Werewolf and I was IN LOVE!! I was devistated when I couldn't find a continuation of this book, but that feeling was short lived when I can across Valerie. I read Love is the Begining and I had to read the next three right away. My two cents: I LOVED the endings for Lucas and Val, they didnt have a fairy tale begining or middle so they deserved the fairy tale ending. Rachel is begging for a series of her own (minus Jack. . calm down ladies).
I feel safe in saying, it doesnt really matter what you write, I will read it!!! You are a wonderfully visual writer and I look forward to each and every future project!

  6. OOOOh. I love your writing style and look forward to seeing what might come next! :-)

(I shamelessly pimp your books out, I think they are vastly under-promoted)

  8. Good, my books need pimping! I suck at promoting. Word of mouth has been the driving force for me.

  10. This is so exciting!!!I think I'm about to cry tears of joy right now. I just absolutely LOVED/LOVE the Valerie Dearborn trilogy and even though I finished the books a while ago, I still think about the characters from time to time, especially after reading other paranormal fantasies because I can't help but compare every single one of them to Lucas and Val's story and see how they measure up. I can't wait for Lucas! <3 Thank you, Caroline!
